Graduation Gift Giving Etiquette
Who should I acknowledge?
Not every announcement you receive requires a gift. In fact, if you don't recognize the name or photo from the invitation, we give you permission to move on to your next piece of mail. Use your best judgment when making the call. If it's a family member, a small gift or card would be nice. If it's your hair dresser's nephew that you've never met, you might want to save your money.
How should I acknowledge?
This can be done with a gift, card, phone call, or even an email. In your correspondence, express how proud you are of his/her achievements and the confidence you have in his/her future. Ask about future plans and college/dorm choice. Your interest alone will show your heartfelt support.
What should I give as a gift?
Cash is usually king. But if you want to purchase a gift, we recommend asking the graduate or his/her parents for specific ideas. We discourage giving clothing unless you are absolutely sure of style and size. A business card case or laptop bag could help launch a college grad into their career. Dorm accessories would likely be appreciated for high school graduates. If you want to get creative, put together a gift basket of non-perishable snacks and goodies for him/her to take to campus.
How much should I spend?
It truly is the thought that counts. Purchase an item or gift card that is within your budget. Whether you give a homemade card with a sincere message or a new Mac computer, the graduate will be touched by your thoughtfulness during this exciting time of celebration.
When should I give the gift?
Ship your gift or drop it off during an open house if the graduate is having one. We recommend not taking it to the actual ceremony as it could easily get lost in that shuffle.
Staying within your budget is the smartest gift of all. That being said, it's important to show your support to the graduate as he/she heads out to conquer the world.
